Old Melbourne Finally Closes 23.12.14

"Farewell To Melbourne Hotel Event" Unfortunately I missed this final gig...but just HAD to mention the closure (due to development) of the legendary Perth Indie band scene venue which ran from the mid eighties. Spent many a drunken messy night in there enjoying bands & the moshpits, stagediving & then recovering in a heap on the floor wet with spilt jugs...along with obviously the equally legendary Inner City Firm Nightclub upstairs.

[ OldMelbourneDec2014 ]
The Old Melbourne Dec 2014 (picture by Jane Devine).
"Another slice of Perth's musical history is about to be reduced to rubble....but before they deploy the demolition ball, let's bid farewell to The iconic Old Melbourne Hotel with a once only...never to be repeated musical bash. If the walls could speak they would tell tales from many memorable over seas artists such as The Hard Ons, Cremator, John Cooper Clarke, Johnny Thunders (with Glen Matlock on bass), Flamin Groovies, John Cale, Stray Cats and revered Australian acts Including The Divinyls, The Church, Hoodoo Gurus, Paul Kelly, Midnight Oil, The Sunny Boys, Thrombus, Allegiance to name just a few. Along with celebrated local bands such as The Triffids, The Stems, Bamboos, Holy Rollers, Jackals, Greenhouse Effect, Neptunes, No Flowers No Dress who rocked the foundations through the years. As from the 24th of December...what remains of the band room will no longer exist. So be sure to grab your tickets and rock it out with these bands and many more to be announced for one last time."

[ TSGameOver ]
Teknoscape Website Closes Fri 31.05.13

Sadly the only other (as far as I'm concerned) proper Perth Club & Dance scene page, Teknoscape.com.au is closing today, clicking on their homepage takes you to the graphic above (which if you click on it takes you the new forum-based link) - this statement from creator & owner Petar - "Teknoscape was something I created when I was teenager and never thought it would have become what it has today. It's been running for 17 years so it saddens me to let you know that Teknoscape will be closing down permanently at the end of the month. As the Teknoscape website is so large, it is expensive to host - and over the last couple years with Facebook becoming more ingrained with society, promoters have stopped advertising on Teknoscape, hence the running costs have been coming out of my own pocket. A couple promoters have expressed interest in buying Teknoscape and taking it over, but this is my baby and I would rather finish what I started. Anyhow, thanks for being involved in the community that we created. It has been a lot of fun, i'm happy that TS has been the meeting point for so many (cheers to those couples who are married because of it) and I feel proud that it has help put Perth Dance Music on the map.

Cheers,
Petar"

Keep an eye on facebook for details. RIP Gully – forever missed, never forgotten --> RiP MrW aka Mr.Whippy aka Jeremy Junk - Of Firm, Elevation, Infirmary, Looney Tunes, Monday Madness & Delirium etc fame.

Last Sat morning 16.03.13, Jeremy was killed in a mining incident at his workplace in NSW. Taken from the local news report "Investigations are ongoing into the death of a Ballina man in an accident at a mine at Cobar in central western NSW on the weekend. D.Inspector Luke Rankin from the Darling River local area command identified the man yesterday as 41-year-old Jeremy Junk who was employed as a contractor and police told the ABC yesterday the man had been working at the mine for about 18 months. He said the accident happened about 4.30am Saturday as Mr Junk was working in a kibble (a large bucket used to lift items or people in mines) approximately 1km underground at the CSA copper mine near Cobar. Mr Junk sustained severe head injuries when his head collided with a platform. After being treated at the scene by an emergency response team and paramedics, Mr Junk was taken by ambulance to Cobar hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later".
His family are possibly to have his funeral in Canberra, if that changes to WA I will let you know asap.

Someone I'm proud to call a good mate for 21yrs+, responsible for really helping to put the Perth dance scene on the map, via radio, clubs + events. Huge events like Sonik 98 + the massive Ministry Of Sounds in 99 helped establish the festivals we have today. His work with the authorities to establish (somewhat reasonable) event management guidelines is something most new promoters have no idea they benefit from.

For my part he greatly helped push our live act FaNaTiK, Hardcore + especially the Techno/Trance sound in Perth.

He stood with myself + a few others against 'the Mafia backed' idiocy + corruption of E-Nerve/Thomas in '94 + while many ppl knuckled under, he (like a few of us) suffered physical + property threats+damage but we prevailed & the scene flourished once free again. Can't ask a man more than that...to put his well-being on the line for the music, the scene & principle.

THANKS Jeremy for being YOU, ya wicked sets, ya rude shirts Kev+i always took the mick about outside events when drunk,
your face each time i dropped anything over 200bpm+, your friendship & your honesty.

Spoke via email only a few weeks ago, was trying to schedule in a vinyl swap day next time he was in WA...now we'll do it, just have to wait a little while to catch up again and whereever I end up in the next life I hope YOU'RE on the door to greet me, pleading with Kev & I to 'look a bit sober & behave' & we could come in.

You'll be sorely missed geeza...RiP someone proud to have called a good friend.

Here's a few nice pix by Petar@Teknoscape till I can find some more of him to remind you who he was...(click em)

Conditions imposed on Northbridge and city late night venues 6.05.11

Ok guys I'd thought i'd let you know the new laws affecting us all from the end of May...these are ->

Conditions requiring lockouts and a reduction in the amount of alcohol sold at certain times of the night will soon come into effect at all late-night licensed hotels, taverns, small bars and special facility venues in Northbridge and surrounding areas.
While the conditions vary slightly on a case-by-case basis depending on a venue’s licence type, the general conditions to be introduced remained the same, these include:
· From 1am until the close of trading, no liquor is to be sold or supplied for consumption on the premises in:
a. Vessels with a measurement capacity exceeding 750ml, except vessels containing premixed drinks which shall not exceed 375ml;

b. Non-standard measures of spirits (that is, no more than 50ml of spirits is permitted in any vessel). · From midnight, the sale and supply of drinks in such a way that would encourage rapid consumption of liquor (such as unadulterated spirits or shots) is prohibited;
· From midnight, no liquor is to be supplied mixed with energy drinks; and
· Patrons are prohibited from entering or re-entering the licensed premises 30 minutes prior to the close of trade as stated on the licence or permit (that is, a “lockout” will apply).

The conditions will come into effect on Monday, May 23

- So remember licenced premises also all close at 5am now

This affects Northbridge, Leederville, Subiaco, Mt Lawley, East & West Perth - note this doesnt affect the casino (that they make so many $$$ out of).
This is directly lifted from the official regulations that have been (not will be) implemented. Slowly this means the govt is sneaking in the much-feared / rumoured closure of ALL late-night venues (ie nightclubs) except 'nice' trendy bars which cause no troubles at all - be warned people our nightlife & freedoms are slowly being taken from us...stay tuned.

Be interesting to see how events that weekend (ie Magic City) get hassled needlessly by Liquor & Gaming

Doofs Make The News At Last - Not For The Right Reasons 6.04.11

"Hippie parties worrying cops"
written by RONAN O'CONNELL, The West Australian April 6, 2011
Police are concerned about an increase in dangerous "hippie" parties in bush where revellers aged from their teens into their 50s binge on drugs.
Boddington officer in charge Sgt Mick Sears said a bush party in Bannister at the weekend at which a 16-year-old boy was treated for a drug overdose and 16 people were charged with drug offences was just one of many similar events which had taken place in bush south of Perth.
Sgt Sears said the parties were advertised through social networking websites rather than traditional media in an apparent attempt to keep them secret from police and other authorities. Police had found evidence of numerous bush parties held in bush south of Perth in recent months and at Easter last year charged several people with drug offences after they uncovered a similar "hippie" event in a national park at Mount Cook.
The party in Bannister which went from Saturday night through to the early hours of Sunday morning had been attended by 300 people ranging from underage teenagers to people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Police stopped more than 70 cars as they left the party, charging four motorists with drink driving and 16 people with possession of drugs including cannabis and LSD. Sgt Sears said the organisers of the party had brought their own generators to power lights and sound systems.
"We were surprised by just how many people had drugs at this party," he said. "They were all dressed like hippies and very polite but there were a lot of people affected by drugs."

WELL...at least they were polite and didn't seem to hurt anyone (as usual!). Do like the comment that they'd brought their own generators etc - must say you don't find many power points out in the bush??? sigh

"Boy, 16, overdoses at bush rave party"
written by Phil Hickey (the chap who did the 'expose on Sunrise NYE), PerthNoew.com.au April 04, 2011
A SIXTEEN-year-old boy was taken to hospital yesterday after a suspected drug overdose during a rave in bushland south of Perth. St John Ambulance was called to the bushland area in Banister, about 116km south of Perth, about 8am. The boy was eventually taken to hospital for a suspected drug overdose. It is understood up to 300 people were attending the rave. Police charged 16 people for drug related offences as they left the rave, while a number of other people were also charged with traffic offences.

Well 2011 seems to be off to a 'great start' NOT *sigh*. My cat Tigger...aka Tiggy...aka The Stingin The Tail Furry Raver...slipped away in my hands tonight. He was my friend and not 'just a cat'...when I fell in the door home from Stingin The Tail I there he was in the kitchen (my parents had found him dumped in the road near the old Entertainment Cntr) where he'd escaped from the laundry & then proceeded to attack my feet! He was a great listener sitting on my bed as i'd rant to him about something bad going on & he spent many-an-hour happily in my room while I was bangin out tunes at top volume. You WILL be missed & loved always - You were the cat's whiskas my son...MeOw!

Rise Nightclub to close Mon 3.01.2011

In a surprise for most, Rise Nightclub has announced that Mon 3rd Jan entitled 'The Last Night On Earth' will be the last night ever at Rise after a wonderful (and award-winning) 11 years. After that night Rise will be closing for renovations and, once completed, will be reopening as a brand new club".
I've been going to & playin in this club in its various incarnations for 21yrs+. Its always sad to see any (half decent) club shut its doors & this building has certainly made its mark on the Dance music scene in Perth since day one when it was 'Networks'...BIG respect to Simon, Christian, Tania & all the Rise Team for making this club such fun to attend & play at for so long...gone u may be...forgotten u will not, move a night elsewhere & i'll be there - see you on the last 2 nights!
Stay tuned for apparent moving of the regular theme nights elsewhere in the meantime...

'The Day The Music Died' 8.12.80

This was the day legendary Beetle John Lennon was gunned down outside his hotel apartment 30yrs ago - just thought I'd mention it as a bad moment in music history.

--==*==--

Northbridge Council Blitz Fri 3.9.10

City officers turned up at a number of Northbridge clubs at around midnight (with Police backup), demanding licenced premises head counts & checking listed management being present etc. One such gig affected was 'Twisted' @ Revolution on Newcastle St, the outside arena immediately got shut down, all the crowd then got moved inside and then they asserted the event was then 'over capacity' - what amazingly nazi behaviour! They threatened to return in an hour & if over capacity still they would shut the event down...something that's hard to put back on the punters by people running a night as you then have to throw out some people through no fault of their own. On their return they were wanting to check log books on fire extinguishers etc - an interesting wind-up at 1am+. Apparently Rise & some other clubs were also part of this 'blitz'.

Caleb Delamare (aka "Bird Man", aka Psy Nox) 06.07.1971 - 16.01.2010

I can't believe another year is marred already by the loss of someone...
I'm proud to have known and called Caleb a close good friend. I had the privilege...nah the HONOUR of knowing him for nearly 20yrs - in & outside the scene. His work with animals & wildlife rescue from snakes, birds & injured mammals to the Raptor Wildlife Centre in Margaret River was truly amazing. I was stunned years ago watching him demonstrate what he called 'home falconry' with a bird he'd rescued - watching it fly away & return to his glove when he whistled for it was just...wicked.
I remember once crossing the road a yr or so ago at Rokeby Rd & he was in his car at the lights shouting to me about the tiger snake he had in a bag on the back seat - should’ve seen other ppl's reactions - classic.
We wouldn’t sometimes see each other for months but then catch up regularly - the way a good friendship should be without need for 24hr contact but when we caught up it was like we were never apart - we both got each other through so many bad times - you really helped me through a lot of darkness brother...for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart...
I love ya son... you were & will always be one of my lifelong mates who now joins the ranks of the fallen & sorely missed. I spent a lot of NYE with him & was only talking to him Fri after bumping into him as he was gonna come to Rise that night to hear the premiere of the new tune i'd done with Greg & then onto the doof with us... I wondered why I hadn’t heard back from him. It would be nice to go a year without losing someone...anyone. Always, always the good ones.
The brightest stars burn twice as bright & half as long...the sky just lost a very bright light...To his dad Noel, his cousins Steve, Jarrod, Monique, Rebecca & everyone else that knew him I feel your pain...this is so, so sad.

I love these pics of him & Azrael it just about sums him up best.

[ Caleb1 ][ Caleb3 ][ Caleb2 ]

Dedicated to my fallen brother...

Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V)"
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

His funeral is 10.30am Thurs 28/1/10 @ Norfolk Chapel, Karrakatta if you wish to pay your respects - please do.

The Last Digger Dies 3.06.09 - RiP

Australia's oldest man and its last surviving veteran of WWI (out of 417,000 troops that served) died on Wed at the age of 110. Jack Ross, who joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in the last months of WWI 91 yrs ago, died in his sleep in a nursing home in the southern country town of Bendigo. He was born in 1899, enlisted in the Australian military that fought with British forces in Jan 1918 and was trained in the use of radio before being assigned to the 1st Battalion in his native Victoria state. But the Great War drew to an end in Nov of the same year and he was demobilised before being posted overseas. He served the Australian military again in WWII as a member of the volunteer defence corps. The teetotaller and non-smoker was active until a few years ago and attended the annual Anzac Day parade that honours Australia's contribution to conflicts starting with WWI until 2005 when he became too frail.
He was one of only a handful of remaining soldiers in the world who served during the Great War. Only three British WWI soldiers are still alive.
"They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We Will Remember Them".

Amnesty Drug Bins For WA Music Festivals & Events from March 09

"AMNESTY drug bins will be installed outside WA rock concerts after the death of a teenager who swallowed ecstasy tablets in a panic to avoid detection. Apprentice hairdresser Gemma Thoms, 17, "cooked from the inside" after taking three ecstasy tablets before entering the Big Day Out at Claremont Showgrounds in early Feb. She took two of the tablets in a panic before entering the festival after worrying police sniffer dogs would detect the drugs.
Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan told The Weekend Australian he would act on a talkback caller's suggestion to erect "amnesty bins" at similar events, so that festival-goers could get rid of drugs without being prosecuted. Mr O'Callaghan said he believed WA would be the first state in the nation to implement the bins, which would be introduced in March at the Rock It music festival in Joondalup, in Perth's north."
I wonder if this will only be a feature at large-scale media-visible events that the council wants to 'be seen' doing 'the right thing' at...likely unfortunately. One interesting point I found in the articles in the W.Australian etc (including a 'detailed account' of her day) - the all mentioned three pills being taken, but only two were documented in the breakdown of the day (even though that was the main news item) and yet it detailed going on rides and other activities quite clearly...interesting.

The Victorian Bushfires Feb 2009

The death toll from these awful Bushfires is still to remain unknown for a long time. What makes this devastating tragedy all the worse is that it may have been deliberately lit. I hope the people responsible are brought to justice, lose their home and every possession they own (give it to the appeal) and they rot in jail for this...I can't be plainer...it's murder.
Personally I'd like to see them slowly set on fire and suffer like the poor victims.

Scientists Finish Large Hadron Collider (LHC) 10.09.08

Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) started up a huge particle-smashing machine on Wednesday, aiming to re-enact the conditions of the “Big Bang” that created the universe. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest and most complex machine ever made and the platform for what experts say is the largest scientific experiment in human history. Tests conducted inside the tightly-sealed chamber, buried under the Swiss-French border, could unlock the remaining secrets of modern physics and answer questions about the universe and its origins. The 10 billion Swiss franc ($9 billion) machine’s debut came as a blip on a screen in the control room, with a particle beam the size of a human hair appearing in the tightly-sealed 27km circular tunnel. Once established, it will be possible to send beams in both directions simultaneously to create high-energy collisions at close to the speed of light.

- Well it's not really music scene news but MAY affect us all if one theory is proven right - that it will trigger a Black Hole and the world will end as a result! Also you may find it interesting that one of the main professors involved in this project used to be the keyboardist for House group 'D:Ream'...their main track 'You're The Best Thing' from 1992 I'm sure you know.

The FINAL Earthcore Announced

[ Earthcore ]
I don't normally detail Eastern States gigs as this is not the subject matter of this site, however I think this event news warrants mentioning. Earthcore in Victoria have been a stable outdoor Psy-Trance festival (basically starting as doofs) since 1993. Many a Perth punter has trekked East to attend these now huge events and it is with some sadness they are announcing the final one for whatever reason...this from their website -> "After 15 years of rocking festivals it`s time to end things on a high note and announce the last Earthcore ever. There will be no reunions, no comebacks, no more Earthcore after this year`s final bash !!!!!!!!!!!! Be sure that Earthcore 2008 will feature a stella lineup we think made the festival what it was over the last 36 Earthcore`s from 1993 till today.
Stay tuned for more news !!!!!!!!!! In the meantime to show some love to our supporters (this means you you and you!!!!!) we have launched cheapo tix at $85+bf via www.earthcore.com.au. Tickets full presale price will be $150+bf.

GrooveFM (6YMS) Licence Renewal Refused 29.2.08

In a surprise move, the Australian Communications and Media Authority Board has seen fit to NOT renew the on-air broadcast licence for Groove 101.7FM for the next 5year period - no details to be had exactly as to why...one theory is their playing of 'adult' lyric versions (ie not mainstream friendly censored edits) at daytime slots, something a few people have commented on to me that they have heard numerous complaints about. I suppose that is fair enough...on 6RTRFM we often were pulled up if someone swore or lyrics were deemed 'inappropriate' and that was shows starting after midnight! Apparently they have two months two remain on air temporarily whilst they strive to appeal the decision. Stay tuned.
Few more details including their online petition etc on the Groove website here.

Just thought I'd let you all know about the passing of Old School DJ/Producer H.M.S
H.M.S stands for "House Master Steve".
He produced many classic trax like -> '2 Go Mad In Boscaland' (on Little Giant Music) & 'Harmonik Distortion EP' (on Jumpin' and Pumpin'), 'E-Bland-E' (On Giant Trax) and you may remember the '10 B&H & a packet of Rizla' classic (amongst others) in 1992. He went on later to co-produce many hard Gabba/bangin aCiD trax on labels such as 'Outcast Clan', 'Twisted Vinyl', 'Screwface', 'Boscaland', 'Hard Of Hearing' and appears on some early Thunderdome compilations to boot. He DJ'd all over the UK at events like Sterns, Diehard, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, as well as countless club and illegal events and was often referred to as one of the scene's nicest & most genuine people...always the way innit?

R.I.P JaMeS HaRcOmBe 27.08.07

[ James H ]
The world will be a darker place without your smile to brighten it.

After a valient fight with cancer, James passed away in August. His positivity, kind heart, pragmatism and sometimes silliness were what made him such a special person. He saw the world with clear eyes and greeted each day with a grin. He made sense when others did not. He dealt honestly and graciously with all that came before him and knew every punch line in 'Red Dwarf'. He was a lover, a fighter, a thinker, a joker, a HaRcORe raver through & through...(I don't know how many front rows of events I saw him 'avin it large at) and he was our very good friend. James, Rousa & I shared a very special trinity of vinyl addiction and the constant good-natured competition to see who could track down that particular rare tune was something that only those who have experienced the 'thrill of the hunt' can appreciate. He was larger than life and will live forever in our hearts.

The dancefloor just got a whole lot emptier...Rave on my son...HaRdCoRe You KnoW The ScOre!!

Just a little tribute for him from Rowan & Hutcho ... our thoughts & love to his family & Claire.

DC's & Gravity Knocked Down 18.2.07

[ DCs ]
DC's/Taipan Room

[ Gravity ]
Gravity/Drum Club

Get out the handkerchiefs & black armbands...man I am totally gutted. One of the legendary meccas of underground clubbing in Perth is gone...and when I say gone I mean totally levelled likely for more flippin inner-city apartments for @#$&** people who want to live in the entertainment district but then complain non-stop about the noise. Whatever you knew it as...E-On, The Infirmary, Ressurection, Gravity, The Drum Club, Futurevibe, Soul City, Dual Control (DC's), The Cave, The Taipan Room, A.W.O.L, Mentasm etc...from 1991 this was (along with Berlin, Networks, James St etc) one of THE locations for underground dance in Perth and the birthplace of many a DJ career and the location for so, so many unforgettable nights. I count myself as priviledged to have played in every incarnation of this club from E-On in late 1992...I even went a few times to the $17/a head all-you-eat/drink restaurant that was there from 1989-1990. Man the memories that building could tell (it was even haunted!). Some of us tried to salvage some souvenirs from the wreckage...but mostly to no avail...although a couple of people i spoke to grabbed a brick or two...what a sad day. Recently (late Jan 07) we were out in Northbridge & I happened to take two (possibly the last) photos of the club standing as I was suspicious about the fences...
Of course as we now know (Jan 2008) yet more yuppie inner city units are being built on the site - yet another complaint-generator for the shrinking Northbridge 'entertainment district' - unfortunately this time at the cost of a clubbing icon. Perth could be likened to the ever-dwindling South American rainforest - being continually encroached on by those looking for a quick buck, in this case selling 'modern city living' (eg like the ones near Heat being sold as 'doubled-glazed' against noise only in reality the builders have cheaped out on standard windows which let all the noise)...you wonder how many years it will take to completely replace all the nightclubs & bars with apartment blocks. Where will everyone go then? Perth might become a second Adelaide...shudders....

Daylight Savings Introduced In WA Sun 3/12/06 @ 2am

Love it or hate it (personally i can't stand it) daylight savings gets a THREE year trial (read as forced on the public even though it was defeated in public referendum before) in WA this month (you'd think one would give enough of an idea really). Be interesting if after the 'trial' has finished, the govt just make it permanent - well they didn't ask us this time did they? One funny (almost pro?) point i thought up, was let's say you're booked for a DJ set (or working) that night from 1-2am (the cutoff to Daylight Savings starting) - officially you finish at 3am after the clocks adjust...so it's maybe the only time you can you ask for 2hrs pay for a 1hr set! Worth a thought i reckon! hehe

S.O.S Shuts

Another club night ends - Friday the 13th Oct being the last night of the F.O.R.C.E crew 'Save.Our.Sound' (Mk.II). After a HUGE night for 'Commercial Resistance' on Fri 6/10/06 (what a wicked party that was), the owners (yet again) got a little greedy and saw $$$ instead of reality and ruined it for all (including themselves) by making their revised demands so unreasonable it just wasn't worth continuing there - so we're off and on the hunt for another venue - stay tuned!!!
Had to add...and since we left the place has sat vacant...well done guys, you really know how to run a business!

R.I.P Da Lady DJ Isis 29.3.06

The world gets a little smaller, a little colder, a little emptier, a little quieter...
What a bad way to start the news this year, with yet another tragic loss for the scene with tha first lady of Jungle in Perth - Mahsa (aka DJ Isis), a very well-known face to anyone who's been around in the scene for a while...sadly passed away after a tragic car accident last week. She worked at DC's (often w/Rachel Harvey) andmany events over the years, as a lighting tech, sound tech and (very underrated) DJ - the first chick I ever heard not only like, as well as dance to, buy & DJ - Jungle. She often did BPM on RTR-FM w/Mental, Nick & I, always turning up w/a six-pack or two...dammit I only spoke to her the week before. She was both a (very!) livewire of any party & a very close dear friend - once again I (and a lot of others) are just gutted by crap like this.
All we know so far is that she fell asleep at the wheel & had a head-on accident dammit...what makes it all the more tragic is that the person she collided with (who also did not survive) was a relative...two low blows for the same family.
Big condolences out to her son & family - RIP babe give my regards to my boy KaRnaGe - take care of him for us.

Here's a couple of nice pix of her to remind you who she was...(click em)

Not The Best Of Ends to 2005

Wed 15/12/05 my car is broken into, @#$*& amateurs cannot steal it (thank god for 2ximmobilisers), so they try to nick my stereo & fail (whoefully I might add) at that as well...but not without damaging a lot of the dash in the process, nicking my work bag & my favourite winter jacket (which is unique so watch out whoever you are!).
Then on Thurs 22/12/05 on the way home from work a @#$*& truck driver in a 20-tonner decides to play bumper cars w/me on the freeway & instead of merging behind me, hits me at the rear of my car & flips me round 90 degrees & rams me side-on for 200m or so on the front of his bullbar, until he finally decided something was jammed under the front of his truck & started to stop. Phew...I was very lucky to walk away w/minor injuries. Proves the old VL Commodore is indeed a very solid car - I still drove it home after a nervous ciggie or twenty!

WA Govt/Council Proposals 20.7.05

The Liquor Licensing Act 1988, the legislation governing all Western Australian licensed premises, is currently under review. The proposed changes to update the act are bound to both please and anger late night clubbers with such recommendations as:-
1) Licensees be required to provide free potable water at all times liquor is sold.
2) Extension of Sunday trading hours for both pubs and clubs.
3) The shortening of nightclub closing times from 6am to 5am.
4) Lock out conditions for all nightclubs prohibiting entry after 3am (no changing venues after 3am – even multi room events).
Of interest is the justification for the shortening of nightclub closing times:-
The City of Perth suggested that there needs to be a clean up time for public spaces in entertainment precincts, for example Northbridge, to promote a smoother transition from the evening to daytime economy and to reduce opportunities for anti-social behaviour. Cabarets can currently trade to 6.00am in the morning however, according to the Cabarets Owners Association, the consumption of liquor reduces towards the end of trading and the economic benefit of trading between 5.00am and 6.00am is minimal. The committee believes that by amending the permitted trading hours of cabarets to 5.00am, the risk of conflict between cabaret patrons and other members of the community starting their day will be reduced with minimum negative impact on the cabaret industry.
For a full summary of the recommendations follow the links from www.rgl.wa.gov.au page.

Have your say to these laws - they'll affect us all!!!

'Revolution' Opening Night Sat 25.6.05

In somewhat of a surprise move, Rise starts a Saturday night w/a new music format of Breaks, Drum'n'Bass, HaRdCoRe/Hardstyle & Techno. Should be interesting to see how the underground crew respond to the weekly offer of music at this venue rather than the smaller, underground ones we're used to...Stay tuned.

R.I.P Another Raver 2.4.05

Another loss for the scene with tha man like da Ben French, a likely well-known lad to many of the ex-Gravity & rave crews who sadly passed away this week. Just thought I'd let anyone know who hadn't heard - big condolences out to his family & friends - RIP mate.

Metro City loses license & is shut - Wed 16.2.05

Perth’s biggest nightclub, Metro City, has been shut down by the WA liquor licensing board - the nightclub has had its liquor licence suspended indefinitely following an incident in which a bikie was stabbed in the neck and a rival gang member was shot (average night at Paramount around 2am or so really).
The West Australian Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor yesterday said the liquor licence of the Metro City nightclub in Northbridge would be suspended until the department was satisfied each person directly or indirectly interested in the business was 'a fit and proper person' - ah well wait till after the election then it all goes away as usual!

--==*==--

Nightclubs Raided - Sat 5.2.05

Heat, The Monkey Bar, Ambar and other Clubs & Bars were raided by 30 or so undercover & uniformed Police officers each in a surprise move by authorities this night. Anyone with bags (even magazine photographers etc) were told to turn out all items. No idea if anyone was arrested yet, but one venue was fined, apparently for an underage drinker being on the premises? An interesting crackdown by authorities (an interesting publicity standard right near state-election time - remember the 'Utopia' non-completion debacle in the old Marco Polo Function Centre opposite Simon's Seafood last election?) More on this soon as I get it.

The Prodigy Biography Released

No, you heard it right the first time...those UK Electronic Punks have a 300-page book out!
"Released to coincide with their long awaited fourth album, this book is a collaboration between the band and their personal friend, Martin James. Drawing on exclusive interviews with the band and their colleagues it recounts the band's birth in Essex, brings back to life their earliest gigs, the initial media disinterest and their first disastrous US tour. It frankly covers their explosion on the international live circuit, their release of the fastest selling album of all time, Fat Of The Land (beating even Michael Jackson's Thriller) and the production of their highly anticipated fourth album, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned."
Click here for a Direct link to the Amazon Book Info Page.
Well I never...you learn something new each day...classic...might be well worth a read this one...wonder if it has any info on the hilarious times had in Perth (and Oz) on their tours here in '92, '94, '96 etc?

Racket Club Final Night 27.8.04

Well its changing hands yet again...the Racquet Club, Marble Bar and the latest incarnation 'Racket Club' has been sold to new owners yet again. Will keep ya posted.

Base TV Starts 12.7.04

Perth has a new nightlife TV show (about time again) which started on the 12th July on Access 31. It is on Monday night at 9:30pm - check it out.

--==*==--

Nightclubs 80% Smoke Free From 1.7.04

You either do or ya don't, but from this date onwards Perth clubs are supposed to be mostly ciggie-free. First most of us knew about this was either reading the ads in X-Press or going to clubs like Rise for 'Deja Vu' on Sat 17.7.04 to find the balcony so rammed full of people getting a smoke in (their allocated 20% space) that the atmosphere tended to suffer as a result. A sign of things to come perhaps...although how in some clubs (with one room only) they're going to divide the room up remains to be seen.

--==*==--

Winter is here innit? 10.7.04

Well certainly if any of us were in doubt as to the season or if you just awoke from a coma, then Saturday's (10.7.04) freezing weather might have taken you by surprise also. Been a longtime since I remember wiping ice off the windscreen when getting in the car at the end of a night. Apparently it dropped to less than 1 degree just before sunup...wonder how many people walking round with shirts off in the outside chillout got sick hmm?

--==*==--

Another Raver / Clubber Passes On - R.I.P

In further sad news Perth lost another old face...as Francis Dela-Merded was killed last week in a car accident as the Hyundai Excel he was driving rolled as it left the road and hit a tree (apparently due to being blinded by the afternoon sun). Many people would have just known him as Frank or his nick - 'Tragic'. A service was held at St.Mary's Cathedral + then the burial service at Pinnaroo Memorial Park on Thursday 20-5-04. ReSpeCt mate.

--==*==--

Metros / Berlin Raided 5-5-04

For some (as yet) unknown reason Police raided the premises of Metros City + the Berlin office space on Wednesday afternoon. Complete with sniffer dogs, the whole lot...a sign of things to come for Perth clubs? More info as I (maybe) get it.

MC Lurch Back To Tha UK 30-4-04

The end of April also signalled the last weekend of 'small-in-stature, but-huge-on-boom' UK lad Lurch in Perth (for now). He had to return back to tha homeland due to crappy visa restrictions. As soon as possible he hopes to return...big respect mate, you'll be sorely missed by all those who took your presence here for granted somewhat - Hurry back we miss ya already! 8-)

Tom Wilson (Scotland) R.I.P

In very sad news...Scottish DJ/Producer scene legend Tom Wilson passed away Thursday 25-4-04 apparently from a heart attack aged 44. His Forth FM, Wave 102, Scot FM, RealRadio + Beat 106 radio shows were hugely popular...the man playing many, many events such as Fantazia's 'Big Bang', Fubar nights + Rez, as well as all over Scotland + the UK in clubs + raves. His Steppin Out label releases + tha massive tune 'TechnoCat' are classics well worth grabbin if ya can. His Official Website is here. A sad day for the scene indeed - more news as I get it.

Your Home Is Your Castle...

At least we thought so until today (Sunday 30-11-03) when whilst trying to get some sleep after a nice late night, some lowlife black guy decided to break into our house at LUNCHTIME whilst we were at home - I mean just how brazen can ya get? You know how hard it is to stand the other side of a venetian blind watching a screwdriver coming through? Suffice to say I hit him before he came in. I'm working on punji pits + napalm traps as we speak...

England Win Rugby World Cup 22-11-03!

Well its been a longtime between victories like this one...I have to admit I has tissues handy & tears in my eyes as the lads hoisted the cup aloft...what a moment and what a match. Both teams played like men possessed...probably one the best games of rugby I've ever seen I'd have to say...sheer edge-of-the-seat tension all the way to the final whistle.

Perth Dance Music Awards 2002

Well once again it was that time of year again when all DJs/promoters were buying punters drinks (oops I mean asking for their vote) as the Teknoscape crew ran the Innaugral Perth Dance Music Awards once more. They've presented the awards since 1998 which recognises key people and elements in the dance music industry. Check out the official website here for the complete results + info. In the official results released 26th Oct @ The Leederville, you guyz kindly awarded me 1st place again in the 'Best HaRdCoRe DJ' section, followed by Rousa (2nd) + Versetyle (3rd) - good to see those chaps get some recognition as well. I'd just like to deeply thank everyone for their support, votes + kind comments - you make it all worthwhile people...next year I'll try to maintain an even higher level for you and hopefully make it three in a row! Last few years you guyz were kind enough to also vote me :-

Perth Dance Music Awards 2001 - 1st place in the 'Best Rave/HaRdCoRe DJ 2001' section.
Perth Dance Music Awards 2000 - 2nd place in the 'Best Rave DJ' section

DJ Buddy Love Breaks World Record June 2003

TOLEDO, OHIO - USA, June 23, 2003 - On June 22nd, 2003, DJ Buddy Love made history by doing what no other DJ has done before in regards to human endurance. He blew away the previous Guinness World Record® 74-hour nonstop club DJ set by playing vinyl records for 80hrs 5 mins with no sleep in a charity event to benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. His incredible feat started on June 19th at 10am EST and ended on June 22nd at 6:05pm EST at AJ's Carryout/American Mobile Store located at 868 E. Broadway at Woodville Road in Toledo, Ohio USA in an event billed as 'Sleepless In East Toledo for Cancer'. Due to Guinness rules in regards to human endurance records DJ Buddy Love was required to take a 15 minute break every 8hrs. The entire 80hr-plus event was recorded onto CD, and will be available online at a later date.
This Guinness World Record® attempt required almost 1,300 records which were played over the course of the three-day-plus event. Additionally, DJ Buddy Love took a voluntary drug test before and after the event to show that no artificial and/or illegal means were used to stay awake.
Further information about the event can be found on DJ BUDDY LOVE's website at www.webspawner.com/users/djbuddylove.
Phew he must've been hanging out with Sven Vath...although we have done three-day booze/mixups at Rhino's place a few years ago >hic

    Visa Difficulties For International DJ'S

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain visas for international DJ's. Since September 11th, security has been upgraded and visa applications are are being scrutinised more carefully. Prior to this, anyone with a blemish on their record, was overlooked or the situation could be negotiated with the authorities. Not anymore!! Some DJ's that have been visiting our shores for many years, assumed they would be granted visas, as in the past. Unfortunately this directly involves Mickey Finn. He was refused a visa and getting a visa in the future is looking doubtful as well - dammit. 8-(

    Flyer of the Month award
Well I dunno if they realise its an Oz (better still Perth) flyer, but this US flyer archive www.clubflyermuseum.com had awarded our old 1996 'HaRd BoiLeD I' flyer their 'Flyer of the month' award (they may think its a US one because of tha DC's Nightclub on the front). Well why not - they certainly have proved a very popular collectible series amongst (tha guyz at least) ravers here.

    2001 NeWs

    'Faking It' features DJ
Dunno if you've seen Channel 9's UK TV series called 'Faking It'. They take someone as far from the subject as possible and have four weeks to turn them into a fake 'expert'. Friday 4-12-01 episode featured DJ Lottie and others turning this chick (a classical concert cello soloist) into a House DJ in the 4 weeks before putting her on at a big gig. She went to Ibiza with Lottie etc and eventually ended up wowing them at Renaissance and the panel of 4 guest DJ's didn't pick her as the fake. Should check it out its a class show.

HaPpY XmAs + New Year to in tha ScEnE !!
Hope you did better than me - with my last minute Xmas shopping...just couldn't seem to find the time to do it justice...with the shops feeling like they'd been picked over a bit too much. Have to say every year gets more hectic/pressurised and seems to me to lose a little bit of that 'christmas sparkle'? Ah well big up your chest to everyone and hope you didn't eat/drink too much - still you've got plenty of events to choose from to try to dance off those extra-gained calories! See the events page.

    Nightclub changes hands - again
Saturday 8-12-01 was the last Saturday in present format/name/DJ's etc for Ghost Nightclub...which has been bought by a Melbourne crew and is to be shut, redecorated and opened with a new lineup, new staff etc. So everyone there is out of a job after Sat night. What of future events planned there under the current regime - like XS Productions Xmas Eve gig? Who knows.

DJ Menis on Raver Baby !!!
A tilting of your hats and congratulations must be passed to Local lad DJ Menis, who has recently completed a track with DJ Hixxy and which is due for release in Feb 2002 on the 'Raver Baby' label. Menis joins Leroy + Dair as the 3rd Perth DJ to appear with a release on a renowned UK Hardcore label. Respect man, well done.

LPs are making a comeback - ITN News (UK) 10-11-01
Sales of vinyl records have increased for the first time in three years.
New figures soon to be officially released show that sales are up by 40 percent. Production of vinyl records is being cranked up to meet demand and earnings are up too - by nearly a quarter.
Yet mini-discs - the latest digital format - have suffered a halving of sales, while CD sales have slipped back to the levels of five years ago.

It appears to be not just the sound that LP fans love. The look, the feel, even that newly-pressed smell ... all score a hit with music lovers.

The needle that so often and so annoyingly jumped has now jumped the generation gap, while for more seasoned buyers, nostalgia plays a part.

The rise of LPs is mirrored by an equal fall in cassette sales. A 40 per cent slump has relegated them to the bargain bin. As one fan said: 'You have got something you can sit and look at. With CD's you just stick them in your pocket and forget about them.'

TV rubbish (again) - Sunday 21-10-01
Channel 7 News (read as ignorant news) reported on a rowdy party that was broken up by the riot squad at a house in Rockingham Sat night. It was described by the reporter as a 'Rave party at a house that got out of hand' with a few hundred people in attendence. Interesting...if you'd seen the footage as the party was shut down it was solid bogans and surfies...playing rock and drinking crap beer.
Is everything now to do with loud music to be termed 'a rave' ??? Gimme a break ...

    South of the border...
DJ Weavy (with Assassin + Mental and crew for travelling companions on the weekend 13-14th Oct) completed a 'Down South' road trip to take the wineries, oops I mean Hard House/NRG to the masses and to show the nice country folk of Margaret River what Teknology Corps and barcards have in common...hehe. Apparently a very good time was had by all in attendance and the crowd was havin it bigtime. News of more trips down South by us as I get tha newz/blackmail photos.

    --==*==--

    On a happier note...
So many events are forthcoming leading up to the end of the year...we've got a few things planned (see events page for rumours/coming soons etc). Lots of big and small parties which will no doubt have people in a stir as to which ones to go to. Hopefully most will get well supported as the days warm up through summer.

    America Under Attack
On September 11th, people fighting a meaningless fight attacked America. The point seems to be death and destruction and nothing else. Apparently, these individuals are willing to die to advance the political agendas of leaders who hide in cowardice. I would ask; if this type of senseless death and destruction is a path to Allah or the afterlife, as they have been lead to believe, why then do their leaders hide from it?
These individuals have awakened the democracies of this world and they will be sorry. As the President of the United States said, "We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts, and those who harbor them." I am confident that those responsible and their allies will soon realize what a foolish and terrible mistake they have made. These acts will not go unpunished.
Update: Building 7 of the WTO complex HAS collapsed, and so has building 5. There is so much debris that rescue workers cannot get to the survivors. Reports are coming in that the government knew 30-45 minutes before the planes crashed that they were hijacked. Hmmm.

    More birthday shouts!
Ok another one ... Dj Freestyle (Monday 16th July) and MC AsSaSsiN celebrated their birthdays (Sunday 15th July)...ReSpEcT ladz!
Also Assassin was back off to Hong Kong the weekend of 21-7-01 for (his second visit) the Asian tour of wicked Drum n Bass Artist/DJ TeeBee (very frequent remixer/artist on the 'Subtitles' + 'Green' labels to name a couple) at an event by 'Cloud 9' called 'Do You Jungle Part 4'. Unfortunately the triads decided to intervene and apparently confiscated the door money, although the event did go ahead... - more on that very soon.

    Clubbers warned over rogue 'Ecstasy'
    London, UK - Monday, 25 June, 2001

    Raindance flyer
The weekend's party ended in tragedy, with one dead.

Police have issued an urgent warning to clubbers after one man died and two others were left critically ill by a batch of contaminated tablets. Detectives said a number of people from the SE1 club under London Bridge - or in its vicinity - fell ill on Saturday night and are urging anyone who took "substances" to seek urgent medical attention.

Bret Gilkes, 20, from the Birmingham area, died on Sunday morning after being taken to St Thomas's Hospital.

If you have taken drugs and you feel unwell you should seek urgent medical attention

    Superintendent Wayne Smith
Two 19-year-old men are in critical condition in hospital and up to six others have attended hospitals with health concerns.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being questioned at a South London police station.

Superintendent Wayne Smith said: "If you have drugs and haven't taken them you should hand them into the police. Your actions may save lives."

A spokesman added: "It is not our intention to prosecute anyone for possession of these controlled drugs.

"This is to encourage people to speak freely with us, to trace the origins of the contaminated batch."

The event called 'Solstice' by legendary promoters 'Raindance' was billed as an indoor Rave Festival celebrating the summer solstice.
The 'Raindance' organisation started over 10 years ago and was the first crew to officially promote legal, fully licensed all night events in the UK.
Their first events were first held in a field in East London and moved to several venues before arriving at 'The Drome' Nightclub in 1999, now called 'SE1'.

    MC Assassin's Asian Tour

    [ Dieselboy ]
    DieselBoy Tour with Assassin
(note billed as Teknology Corps, Perth WA - wicked!)
Assassin flew off to Hong Kong on Thursday 24-5-01 for a few dates, one of which was the wicked gig above - on which he ripped it up (as we would've expected!). Oh and if you're shocked by the ticket price just remember that for each Aussie dollar you get several HK$ so it ain't as bad as it looks! Good luck Scotty - kick it to em!
More soon but here are a few links with his tour info on...

More very soon on audio/video releases - I just don't know what more to say for now.

    DJ Freestyle to Eastern States

In the (hopefully) continuing export of local talent elsewhere in the world, whether it be overseas (ie MC Assassin to Taipei) or anywhere outside WA...DJ Freestyle played @ System 6 in Melbourne on Friday 18th May and Adelaide on Sunday 20th May (a long weekend there). Be nice if this will signal a start to more gigs over East. Apparently he and Viper flew the flag in fine style for WA over there!!

    --==*==--

    Calibre - The Last Night...again

Once again we are faced with closure of a club - at least a 'club' as we know it. The Calibre crew put on an alternative to everywhere else and I must say its a shame more people haven't been there before Hard Boiled, which for many was their first (and good) experience of a venue much like the old Gravity. Once again promoters have had to pull the pin after not the best show of support from a Perth crowd...hopefully not another venue/club gone. It was nice to have a Saturday night in Perth. Respect once again to those regulars who tried to keep it going for everyone else...hopefully the 'Elysium Nights' will keep tha faith...see events page. More as I know it.

    --==*==--

Hard Boiled VI - Crew shirts...

[ Hard Boiled VI ] [ Hard Boiled VI ]
    FRONT
    BACK

We've been asked so many times and finally they're back!
Ok people have been trying to get these off us for years - and that was just the crew - we are doing a very limited run of the new '2001 series' Hard Boiled long sleeved crew shirts. Obviously these are mainly for the crew first, but there are a few spares. We may well do a general 'public version' (ie black on white or short sleeved) as well if there is enough interest - send me an email if you are after one.
Yes the above images are clickable...I spent ages doing em exactly the same as the shirts so that you can get a good idea of what they'll look like!

Billy 'Daniel' Bunter + John Doe - not @ The Leederville?

Well the two busy visitors were to have played at The Leederville Hotel on Wed 21-3-01. But for some unspecified reason, the 'club' changed its mind at the last minute and cancelled. Hope not too many people made a journey down there only to find the regular local lineup. Ah well - maybe next time.

    Optimum Recordings release

Optimum Recordings first 12" single has just been released, and is available in record stores. For those that dont already know, the first vinyl release features Adrian Sardi's "3rd Degree Burn" and Echoic's "Droid", two BIG dance floor tunes which have been causing quite a stir on dub plate and promo over the last couple of months. Don't pass on this one, as only a limited quantity have been sent to Australia, as demand for this 12" in the UK has been massive!!

    DJ Dair has to wait...

Perth's DJ Dair who was due to make his UK debut on the rave circuit has fallen miserably in a hole. Dair was booked to play at Raindance on the 24th Feb but due to licensing problems, the venue 'The Drome' was unable to hold the event...looks like the UK will have to wait a bit to experience the Perth flava!!! But not too long we all hope. Good luck Russ!!!

Teenager dies after Big Day Out crush

A teenager who suffered a heart attack when caught in a crowd crush at Sydney's Big Day Out concert died Wednesday (31/1/01).
The 15-year-old girl, who has been identified only as Jessica, died in Sydney's Concord Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at the event 28/1/01.
A Concord Hospital spokeswoman said the young girl had passed away peacefully. The family had requested that no further details be released and have asked for privacy.
Six others were injured in the crush during the final performance of the event at Homebush Bay. The 55,000-strong crowd started surging forward while headline US band Limp Bizkit was on stage. The band quit the Big Day Out tour after the Sydney concert, saying security at the event was poor.
They blamed organisers for the crowd problems where more than 600 fans were treated by ambulance officers, mainly for heat exhaustion. - AAP

Stupid really these events have been going on for years now they should have their act together. One thing to note - I've seen this unfortunately happen before - girls PLEASE be careful down in the mosh pit...it ain't for the faint hearted or easily squished + scared.

Darren Briais and DJ Delicious are no longer at the Globe.

Right I'm not going to say to much about this, but in case you didn't know, Darren Briais + DJ Delicious (the Large crew) left the Globe, their last weekend was the Pete Tong night. This means 'Rewind' has been postponed until a change of venue is available - but keep looking here for more info! If you don't know the REAL story, don't spread rumours - I heard some absolute crap this week regarding this situation...

This from the people themselves :-

"Rewind 2001 has been postponed, for new date / venue details check the next issue of Hype magazine or right here at Perth Rave Pages for more info.
Darren Briais & DJ Delicious would like to thank each and every person that has helped or contributed to our weekly club nights 'Large' at the Globe. We would like to sincerely apologise to any individuals that may have been inconvenienced in any way due to the situation relating to our departure from the Globe.
The Rewind 2001 event has been postponed and will definitely be happening on a new date and at a new venue in the very near future. Watch press for details. Once again a Large thank you to everybody!
Coming soon : something very Large, very special, very soon".

    2000 NEWS

    R.I.P Steve 'Tippy' Ostilla - 24.11.2000

The end of the year we lost a dear & CLOSE friend in very sad circumstances. Steve was known & loved by many ppl in & out of the Perth Rave & Club scene, known as the head chef @ The AllNight Pizza Cafe on Albany Hwy (that offered 'Sat Night Specials' if ya had the password!)...he was heavily involved with TeKnoLoGy CoRps from it's inception & also a wicked Sound & Lighting techie who was someone you could ALWAYS count on to be the first to remember to fill the generator @ 3am to stop the power going out (always with a ciggie in his mouth & the fuel JerryCan 2 inches away!) and doing flippin useful stuff like ALWAYS remembering where we put the Gaffer tape in the dark! So many wicked memories of this lad & his antics...I must mention one more. When we were on holiday in Busselton we went on a beer run far too close to closing at midnight & had to FLY into Dunsborough (thank god there were no cops on the road that night) - on the way back he remembered his missus was complaining that "he never got her flowers" so he got us to pull over near the cemetery...we thought he was joking, but no he scaled the fence & a few mins later (dodging security) returned flying through the window as we took off with a VERY wilted bunch of old flowers...we couldnt believe it that she was so chuffed with his romantics she didn't even think to ask WHERE they came from at that time of night...just BENCHMARK!!!!
Tippy we salute you...for who you were, what you got up to & what you got away with..you'll be missed alltime mate!

    Groove

"This is an independent feature film set during one night in the San Francisco underground rave scene. It explores the complexities of a uniquely 90's subculture through its many characters, revealing how raving is an opportunity to connect with life or escape from it".
Made in conjunction with various members of the Bay Area rave scene, GROOVE was filmed at different locations in and around San Francisco, including three weeks in a raw, industrial warehouse. Believing that the only way to accurately portray the rave scene was to involve it, the filmmakers (many of whom are ravers themselves) tapped into the enormous creative energy and talent within the rave community.

Whats it like? A sneek preview didn't look too bad...although usually the American mainstream idea of a rave is so far from the truth its laughable...hopefuly more soon!

Euphoria No More - But...theres more.

...For now...unfortunately - they weren't just empty threats...XS Promotions have had to pull the pin after not the best show of support from a Perth crowd...ah well chalk yet another venue/club gone. It was always something different on a Saturday and lets face it - it was the ONLY club in Perth where you could get Hardcore, NRG, Old School, Trance, Drum n Bass and more all in one night - especially a Saturday. Everyone was complaining there was no Hardcore nights on but there was - here! Once again because most haven't supported it again it has all died Perth - wake up, get off the couch and come out!!! Respect to those regulars who tried to keep it going for everyone else...hopefully the new 'Elysium Nights' will keep tha faith...see events page for more info on this monthly Friday special club event.

    --==*==--

Few things to note - see Saturday's (28/10/00) West Australian for info on 'Ministry' amongst others...
'Euphoria' was on the new 'Fusion' show on Channel 31 on Thursday 2/11/00.

Well they needed someone and I need the money...so X-Press will be getting me to review certain events here and there. Promoter bribes can be sent to this address...nah just joking you'll get the same straight-forwardness I try to maintain on here. I look forward to working more with them. Been a while since I worked regularly on a magazine review team (done a few guest spots here and there for Hype etc)...since 'Eternity Magazine UK' days when I was the Australian correspondent.

    Some more scene exposure

Well I suppose you can call it that roughly? Channel 10 each week has a show on Thursday nights at 9:30pm-10:30pm called 'Ibiza Exposed' - it does feature a lot of girls in stuff-all so the guys will like it but it does show a lot of the clubland and nightclubs there. Oh and it is pronounced 'Eyebeetha' for all those who listen to commercial crap like Vengaboys and say 'Ibeeza'!!!

    --==*==--

    Can anyone help?

The VBoom show on Thursday 20/7/00 featured more of the interviews from 'Perthquake' in May. I missed it...can anyone lend me a copy on video?

Greg Packer releases debut CD album

Friday the 4th August was the official launch date set for this release, the first on 'Interphase Recordings', a double CD featuring some excellent music - one with Greg's more breaks/Trip Hop tracks on and the other Drum n Bass/Jungle trax. Well worth a listen better still buy it and support the Perth music scene.
It is available now from all good Dance music stores such as the DJ Factory and Central Station.
The second album on this new label will feature a mixture of remixes and tunes written specifically for this release. Greg's collaborations with other Perth DJ's/producers such as Echoic, Fanatik, Hutcho, Size, Mental amongst others to feature. Stay tuned...

    Club and event drama

Few things on the rumour mill round Perth...

    1. I have heard a strong rumour from a very reliable source that the new Perth House 'Superclub' ' Utopia' is going to be in central Northbridge - namely opposite Simon's Seafood restaurant in the old 'Marco Polo' function centre...apparently was slated for a late October opening and with a very spacey theme throughout ...stay tuned...
    2. The 'Calibre' Fri & Sat nights obviously had to stop, but I thought you should all know the reason why. The promoters are in the process of finding another regular home after a certain someone who lives in the newish units on the opposite side of the train tracks near the Grand Chancellor Hotel, made noise complaints during the night of Saturday (3/6/00) at Metros. That area was also were responsible for EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) drama at 'Desert Storm 94' re sound...what can you do? People move right near Northbridge and then complain about the noise...bit like moving to the bottom of Perth Airport runway and then kicking up a stink about planes overhead (sigh). One serious worry is the amount of new housing springing up in Northbridge...what will it mean for the club circuit? New Calibre venue hopefully soon - will keep you posted!

100 DJ's performed live in Prague June 23-26th in a 50 hour non-stop webcast party to celebrate the diverse life and culture on the Net, promote the liberalization of telecommunications locally and globally, and encourage governments to make the Net accessible for all. Also probably to rack up a heafty net access bill for someone hehe.

    EZ-Test Kits available in Perth

At last these self drug-test kits are available in Perth from these vendors :-
    Dada Records (Pier St)
    Jack Clothing (Beaufort St)
    Joint Venture (Hay St)
And hopefully soon from Central Station and 78's Records.
About time they have become publically available here...maybe now some lives can be saved - they're not perfect but its better than nothing.
If you would like more information...email them here.

Another testing kit page, this time from Melbourne
E testing kits, are currently available in a growing number of store throughout Australia, including Joynt Venture Perth. These are apparently supposed to be able to test for the presence of Ecstasy, Methamphetamine, Amphetamine, 2CB, DXM and Heroin. Retailing at $19:95 and the capacity 5mls = 200 drop/tests. For more information please visit the website here.

But DO remember that whilst these test kits MAY show up some inferior product as it were, the safest form of enjoying yourself is not to touch them.

    Raves In the Media again

The West Australian on Tuesday 6/5/2000 ran a two page article on raves titled "Inside Perth's Dance Parties".
Should the scene cringe once more? Why do I ask that? Because usually when it is publicised in the media, mainstream society seems to suddenly remember them and then once again the scene is a target for months and suffers (especially during council election season). The view (read as 'delusion') of sections of society is perhaps that once they stomp on a few parties they sweep the drug problem (as far as the public's perception is concerned) under the carpet for a while, at least until something happens (often after a bust or drug overdose) and then suddenly they have to be seen to be doing something about it.
    So in this instance?
I think its fair to say (for once) its a fairly balanced article (pg16+17).
In it, the writer basically covered the history of raves, how they work, the society view and legal aspects. It was also partly a review of 'Sonik 2000' and 'Madhatters', with the rest made up of material from the Hypnosis website and mine.
For my part, my 'quotes' are from combined interviews, both from this page and others.

Also you may want to see the latest edition of "Time" magazine. In it there is an article on Ecstacy and the US scene.

    Holiday weekend decisions!

Well we had yet another weekend to stress over...its getting as bad as New Year's Eve lately...too many good events all with good artists worth seeing...as I've said before its a shame when many in Perth have missed out on seeing internationals they've been hangin for years to see live because all their friends have been going to something else on the same night etc. Sunday the 4th of June was a similar problem...lets face it 'Madhatters' is always a good laugh and a good night out...but over the train tracks @ Sonik2000 ; Fierce, Matrix, Freestylers & 'Evil' Eddie Richards were a very viable drawcard...then if you're a big hard House fan...there was John Kelly etc @ Independance...sigh...people chose what they did but unless you could somehow clone yourself and be at all three, we all missed out somewhere...sux doesn't it???

Hardcore DJ's feature on Channel 31

Local hardcore / Drum n Bass DJ's + gigs are featured on a new show - "Vboom TV" at 10pm Thurs nights on Channel 31. Interviews were conducted at 'Perthquake' (Fri 21/4/00) and footage shot has been shown on the show along with some from the 'Random Logik' with Scott Brown. A scene not given much exposure by the media or magazines here unfortunately - so maybe a step in the right direction.

Perth + Packer get a mention

Rennie Pilgrim has a small review on his down under tour and also lists Greg Packer's demo CD of tracks at number 9 on his charts! In his words "Greg’s a drum and bass DJ over there but he makes brilliant breaks music too." - Well done Greg...hopefully the album will also do the same trick!

    Big Weekend & drama?

Feb 18/19th 2000 was shaping into a controversial (and busy) weekend - what with DJ SS and the Dream FM Tour promising DJ Energy and Influence the week before (the cancelled) 'Apocalypse' on the Fri 18th, The Platipus Tour, Planet of the Bass Tour and DJ Ratty(UK) on the Sat 19th Feb. However DJ Energy apparently was not to be here anyway till the 24th Feb, so that has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works re his appearance at 'Dream'. I know much more but won't go into more detail on this drama...

    1999 NEWS

Ecstacy blamed for death in UK - 17-11-99

A 28 year-old Australian man died an hour after being taken to hospital, following taking a suspected poisoned 'rave drug' in London nightclub, 'The Astoria'. His death prompted a London-wide amnesty for drug takers as police begged clubbers to hand in their supplies before there were any more casualties after two further men were taken sick. Pathologists were working to find out whether an overdose or a contaminated drug sold as Ecstasy caused his death as an initial post mortem was inconclusive and further tests were being carried out.

    Ex-local act featured on Alchemy

Ex-Perth live act Inertia were featured Monday (25-10-99) on 'Alchemy' on SBS. I haven't seen it yet, but hopefully the interview will have done them justice as their album here was (like most local releases) not given much exposure. Check out the Alchemy website for more info.

    Ticket forgeries

Lately this problem has started to rear its ugly head again. At Madhatter's Ball '99, there were a few hundred fake tickets circulating via scalpers etc. Thats why it was taking so long to get people in that night as the door staff had to check each ticket - individually. These people make a good bit of money off you, which creates over-crowding, meaning sometimes people who have got a real ticket can't get in. Also the money doesn't go to the people who are putting on the event, but in the back pocket of a few who probably can't be bothered to do one. Please don't support this activity, its one thing trying to get in free, its another trying to get in hundreds of people at the promoter's and punter's expense.

    Perth's Dance Scene TV Shows

We finally have our first two locally produced dance scene TV shows. The first show, called 'Filter' is on Channel 31 at 9:30pm on Thursdays. Its basically a band and local scene show with some dance segments.
'Momentum TV' - Also on Channel 31. This is an exclusive dance-oriented TV show. It is shown every week on Wednesdays at 10.15pm and then repeated on Saturdays at 11.30am. Well worth a look, this show features presenters who know more what they're talking about. Some of the band drivel and crapping on by some of the presenters on 'Filter' has left me a bit cold.
"tv...promoters..Dj's..clubs..students..volunteers..groovers..have produced movements of sound & visuals - new releases - video clips - Live DJ Tours - local live talent - weekly future events - vinyl giveaways - to create unstoppable momentum - E Legal Productions - presents - momentum tv.....tune into channel 31 uhf...".

Underage parties to become a rarity?

Due to recent nazi (opps I mean council) legislation, licensed venues have become no-nos for hosting underage parties (ie Gilkison's, Embassy Ballroom)...at least for the moment. Recent events like Atom One were lucky enough to be able to secure a venue for the under-18 crowd. BUT once again a pathetic few have stuffed it up for all. Young kids bombing venues and graffing toilets etc has GOT to stop if the under-18 crowd wants to be able to attend raves. Promoters lose their bond for the night but usually the venues afterwards are either off-limits for good or long periods of time(a good example is the Fremantle Passenger Terminal). Understand, the authorities are trying hard to stamp us out...if you tag your name in a toilet at a rave don't expect there to be many more events outside the clubs. I've seen kids do it before...whether it be in the toilets at the Factory Nightclub week-in week-out where I used to play, or the worst example "Frantik" at the Mt.Lawley Tennis Club which was mindlessly trashed by d**kheads who need a slap to say the least. I will say this, if we catch anyone doing it at one of our events (Choice Promotions, Teknology Corps etc) expect trouble. If you see someone doing it please try to stop them before they stop us all. Understand this...I admire graffitti a great deal (not bombing) but IN THE RIGHT PLACE...go find a train if you must - not a venue!

    DC's no more R.I.P.

In a rather shock move to staff and clubbers alike...DC's had shut all nights except for Thursdays. Apparently being a decision by management to cut back on costs, DJ's and staff alike with work on those nights had been told not to come in. This doesn't include the backroom, club "Bon Bonet", just the front room. First "The Cave" went under the financial cutback...then the main club. What a shame that a once huge Dance club has been reduced to such actions, by what can only be blame laid at the management door for letting things get so out of hand. The same problem has been there all year and was why we lost FuTuReViBe...no advertising = no punters. Live and learn guyz.
It re-opened Saturday 15/5/99 as the "Taipan Room" - basically a rock & 70s-90s venue hmm black armbands all round as another era of the scene disappears to commercial rubbish.

    DJ Kemistry killed

Sunday 25/4/99 marked yet another sad chapter in rave history. DJ Kemistry (of duo Kemistry & Storm fame) was killed in a car accident. She was one of the first female artists in Drum+Bass in the UK and joins the growing list of recent tragic losses to the scene. She was an important icon both as a DJ and producer, her work having a part in the shaping of the genre's sound. R.I.P. girl.

    POLITICS - The Last Word?

Unfortunately the webmaster of the Illusion'99 event seemed to have a problem with me. This was a private affair, but he resorted to publically slagging me off on his website (the web is now a better place it now closed!)...sigh. To be honest I think the most laughable thing of all was his spelling.

To him I said this; I really have better things to do with my time and not waste space on this site putting up idiocy like that when it can be used for the far better productive needs of the scene.

To other people who defended him...how do you feel about it now? The promised events haven't materialised and have disappeared into the woodwork with the promoter and much controversy of unpaid money to DJ's + staff. The big rally-round has very quickly been forgotten and hushed-up. Those who were so quick to point and lay blame on my door (amongst others) are now silent and no doubt will never offer an apology or retraction of their comments. I have seen so much of this sort of situation develop over the years, its just a shame when people support + defend someone (without any research into them) who at the end of the day is just laughing at them once the money is in their back pocket. The web pages who tried to boost his arguments have removed the pages concerned...and all is seemingly back to normal - yeah right until next time.

My mention of Gravity sound system earlier in 1999 wasn't to create trouble or turn people away from there. That is my pure opinion of that night I was there. Perhaps it was just bad that night, at that time. I have and had NO problem with the Raggabone crew, or the Globe for them I have only respect, both personally and for their events.

What disturbed me, is that quite a few people seemed to think I treated the Illusion'99 event unfairly and tried my best to put people off going. Judging by some of the laughable accusations lobbed at me from the net, some people really have to get a reality check.
I will repeat again the credo of this site for the benefit of those who doubt me :-

This page is here to provide up-n-coming info on as many events as is possible. I do this in my own time for both parties and clubs for nothing because its worth it for the scene if even a couple of people read my page and go to an event they would otherwise not have known about.
If I have info on this page about a party AT ALL, that means in some way I'm supporting it. I may not like the promoter, the music or the DJ's on offer, but my personal feelings are not the issue here. I believe that my page would be one of the very few which would put info of a competitor's club or party event the same night as our own...but I believe people have a right to know what is one offer, regardless.
The Illusion'99 event yes had a few things about it and in the promotional side of it that I did not like, as a Raver, a promoter, or a DJ. I put certain things (ie read THRUTHS) on my events page that the promoter didn't like, but removed them at HIS request TWICE, so whats the problem? I wasn't going to mention them here as I'm not into online slagging of each other but there are some facts of which you should all be aware as I no longer see why I shouldn't say my piece :-

    1. Promoter turns up from somewhere (under some rock) + starts canvassing with various crew rounds Perth to help organise / run a big HaRdCoRe event.
    2. Ok first indication of problems with event...first pre-flyers (slagging off 'Twisted II' event the same weekend) + posters - using title of 'Dreamscape 99'. The copyright use was checked with promoters/owners in UK who threatened legal suits in no uncertain terms if title was used any further - event / advertising quickly renamed to 'Illusion 99' (rather apt as it turned out).
    3. The event was always to have only gone till midnight @ Metros City (due to licensing) - the club shut + emptied, then the crowd moved onto 418 Murray St (old Rumours) for the remainder of the night. This was still being violently denied from the main balcony by the 'promoter' @ 11:30pm that night. Why? It was true!?!
    4. Fireworks in Metros City over-explode...damaging some of Leroy's tunes he's playing at the time!
    5. Myself and other 'Twisted' crew are banned from entering as promoter has told security to 'break our legs if we come in' (yeah right).
    6. Event continues but is about to take a turn for the worse.
    7. 'Promoter' secretly leaves venue from side-exit huddled down in backseat of car at around 2:30am but is seen by myself + a few others who are standing in front of gate as he peeks out of the window.
    8. Further checks reveal a history of $2 companies + bankrupties by the promoter's 'companies'.
    9. The international DJs have to pay for the rest of their week in Perth as they wait (in vain) to get paid for gig.
    10. Local DJs + crew who worked are left without pay / news.
    11. Promoter last heard of down South (pursued by Private Investigator etc) in hire van Hixxy had paid for in good faith on his credit card + with a underage boy as a 'partner'. Disgusting.
    12. Money for party was raised by Promoters flatmate mortgaging her flat to invest in party - she never saw any of her $20K+ again.
    13. Promoter updates his 'website' with promises of further gigs + huge international lineups. Everyone wonders how as his name is mud in the UK + here.
    14. Website registration finally expires (unpaid) + all proof of his existence/contact with it.

Dare I say 'told you so'? - How many admit we were right to doubt him + his intentions? There was also the question of money issues amongst other things and that is why I personally was iffy on the whole thing. If anyone went and had a good time then fine, I'm glad you enjoyed it - but don't critise me for trying to diplomatically inform people of what goes on. I wonder if the same people had gone to an event and been ripped off would they turn around then and say I didn't warn them if something was wrong and I knew about it. Probably - damned if you do and damned if you don't - wake up Perth.

    MC PREACHER MOVES TO MELBOURNE.

One of Perth's best known MC's, who over the past few years emerged as a solid, reliable MC over Jungle (especially with Greg Packer), Happy Hardcore/Rave and lesser-known, over House is off over East. On Saturday 6/2/99 he performed his last mic duties here with DJ Greg Packer at Futurevibe Nightclub + with a typical rip-roaring set of Old School he pushed the crowd hard. He was booked at clubs such as Gravity and performed at many raves, events and parties, MC'ing at nearly all the major events. He was always a good one to boost the crowd at the right time and his move over there is another big loss to Perth's scene, but maybe he'll return bigger and better than ever before.
    Big respect mate...you'll be missed.

This EP is already for sale in Europe and copies are going fast...with the latest news is that it has already moved 200+ out of 315 copies to the shops over there and it was only released very recently...cool.

    Venue Problems
NB The information i was given on Gilkisons Dance Studio re Ministry of Sound was wrong and (unintentionally) pointed the finger somewhat at Delirium...which was not meant...no disrespect to them intended!
Apparently there is a Liquor + Gaming policy/licensing legal issue which is to be resolved before parties can continue there, not overcrowding at Ministry Of Sound, which is what i was told.
Hmm apparently there are now problems with the Hellenic Centre in Northbridge with damage as a result of the Telethon Fundraiser there recently. The end result? The venue is off the availability list immediately, apparently for good (for raves anyhow)...joining the list of other large venues Perry Lakes Stadium (Time '92), the Fremantle Passenger Terminal (Temple Of Dreams '93) and the Italian Club (Adrenalin '96). Shame - decent-sized venues like that are very hard to find. If the Embassy Ballroom is to go as well then the big venues of Perth are once again off limits. Makes ya wonder if the Northbridge area isn't behind it eh? Because what is the only other alternative for parties then...thats right - back into the clubs. Message to whoever has been complaining and THEY have - leave our scene alone or watch yours die like the boring crap that it is.

    X-Press magazine's So-called "expose of Perth DJ's".
Meant to put this in before. Now this page isn't really intended for slagging anyone off, but I have to mention this. X-Press advertised a forthcoming special comprehensive feature on Perth's DJ's, which you would quite rightly assume to mean ALL the main club/event DJ's at least. Although in the past when X-Press did a similar article, the amount of HaRdCoRe DJ's was lacking to say the least (funny that). Anyway, we were told by X-Press that we would be contacted by our respective clubs and sent a questionnaire to fill out and at some point photos would be taken for the feature. This turned into a mailout form to fill in about yourself, offering an advert-type opportunity for $50+!! - some expose indeed...possibly more of how some publications live above themselves?? So this comprehensive listing turned (once again) into a small few pages on some obscure and mainly mainstream/commercial DJ's with the exception of a few. Sigh...ah well might have to do it ourselves to do it properly. Also perhaps interesting was that one nameless well-known club DJ who got a big write-up happens to go out with a writer from the Clubbed section...wonder if he paid? Hmmm.

    R.I.P. Ken Weyden

Old School Clubbers and Ravers were saddened by the news of the sudden death of ex-Perth DJ Ken Weyden in Hong Kong mid-April 1998, were he was living and working for the last few years. He was one of the pioneers of dance music in WA, playing Networks, Berlin and a regular at all the early raves, as well as co-host on RTR-FM for 'Rhythm Fix' - the old on-air bible for ravers and clubbers alike. His funeral was held in Adelaide. Our condolences to his family and friends...especially Miggy + the Ohm NRG Crew - big respect mate you were wicked.

1997 - The Year In Review
An interesting year...one in which saw the scene get back on its feet and parties abounding, only to be taken back a few steps due to political stupidity near the latter part. Punters had far more event choice this year than in '96, with many internationals gracing our city, more so than we expected. You know when gigs are plentiful again when people are saying "should we go to this party or that one next week?" etc...perhaps a no more true night of this was New Year's Eve. Lots of choice meant lots of people went from party to party, not just camping in one place all night. My personal event highlights for the year :-

    • Slipmatt's old school set @ Gravity (26 Apr 97)
Lenny Dee @ Gravity (30 May 97) - about time Perth got some hardcore in!!
Helter Skelter @ Embassy Ballroom (5th Jul 97) - wicked party and vibe.
Hard Boiled II @ Gravity (9th Aug 97) - Easygroove the Technodread.
Plastik @ Planet (19th Sept 97) - CJ Bolland kicks it!
Hard Boiled III @ Gravity (8th Nov 97) - Madness in the place
      Stingin The Tail V @ 418 Nightclub (NY.Eve 97/98)
      Party Of The Year
Reunion III @ Gravity/DC's (29th Nov 97) - The vibe and tha people to go with it!!

The Question of Venues Being Used More Than Once

Hmm...Ok well I thought its about time I tackled this subject...why do people complain so much about venues being used more than once-in-a-while? Do they realise how hard it is these days to get another venue other than a club? That Perth is a small place - therefore the useable venues are few and far between? That the @#$%* press has scared venues owners by filling their heads full of images of drug-induced illegal activities at these parties? That councils want to stamp us out - totally & do everything they can to stop events going ahead...even giving venue owners threatening phone calls?
To me, the most important factor at a party is the music - you can have a $1,000,000 light & sound show but without the wicked crowd vibe from quality uplifting tunes, it ain't nothin!
Factors that make up a good party :-

    • Quality Bangin Music = Good Vibe.
    • Solid Sound System (loads of bass-in-ya-face!).
    • Good crowd (people who are out to dance + party not stand around talking or looking trendy).
    • Nice Lightshow.
    • Venue (Ultimate = Warehouse, but who cares what).
    • Lots of Beer + Cigs etc (optional extras!).
Also it seems these days that people who complain the most about parties no longer being in warehouses are those who would've missed them in the "old days". How many regular party-goers these days are still around from the "warehouse days"? Don't get me wrong - there's nothing I'd like to see more than a return of parties to big, metal warehouses filled with huge crowds going off to a variety of music all night. Nothing quite sounds like the metal walls rumbling outside when a big bassline rips through the bass-bins....«sigh». What do you think? Let me know.

    N.S.W. NEW STATE RAVE GUIDELINES

New "Rave Guidelines" (eg Tough State Anti-Rave Laws) were established early 97 in N.S.W.
Some of the new rulings include :-

    • Maximum $10 charge for raves.
    • Encouraging promoters to use the word "Dance Party" instead of "Rave".
    • Shutting events which have tap water turned off to make people buy bottled water.
In keeping with Government tradition, they quote : "Are in place to help promoters and authorities work together better to ensure the safety etc of the attending public".
Of course effectively, this means the end of smaller parties/clubs featuring big overseas acts - who can they cover costs when the entry price is dictated by "the powers that be"?? Once again the whole stupid media-hyped rave price issue is raised again. Are the prices asked at concerts (eg Michael Jackson tickets being in excess of $100 etc) ever questioned? NO! Then why must raves be regulated in this way? Will it make them safer? Will it give the raver better value for money? NO.
Will this solve anything - NO! It will drive raves back underground, perhaps where they should be again...kick in a warehouse door and just bomb a party!
